The Blue Legacy Palmyra Atoll

In 2006 I filmed in Palmyra Atoll, one of the Remote Pacific Islands proposed as part of The Blue Legacy. This remote atoll has large populations of migratory birds, endemic plants and large fish. The oceans need areas like these to help sustain the areas we are fishing and impacting directly.

Palmyra Atoll

Write President Bush to support this proposition and leave something good behind for the oceans and for future generations.

Send an email: support of historic marine protection.

Right now, you have the opportunity to speak out in support of historic marine conservation.
President Bush is considering whether to designate two of the most spectacular and pristine marine areas—the Central Pacific Islands (Baker, Howland, Jarvis, Johnston, Kingman, Palmyra, Rose and Wake Islands) and the Mariana Trench—as national marine monuments.
Together, the new reserves would make up the largest protected area on Earth—larger than Alaska and Texas combined.
They would protect largely uninhabited island oases in the Pacific Ocean with millions of seabirds, rare sea turtles and fish.
Send an email—Urge President Bush to protect these marine treasures.
The proposed marine monument designation would be a truly historic decision, but there is a downside.
The White House has included consideration of energy development, mining, and fishing that, if allowed, could harm the wildlife that lives in these areas.
This would establish a dangerous new precedent where national monument designation could actually encourage MORE extractive activity, not less.
The full area—all islands and atolls and their surrounding waters and seafloor to 200 nautical miles—must be fully protected from harmful activities to ensure these areas are maintained in their nearly pristine condition for future generations.
Send an email—Urge President Bush to designate these areas as national marine monuments and urge him not to allow mining, drilling or fishing in these areas.
Thanks for taking action to protect our oceans.
Sincerely,
